October receipts nearly bypass city’s all-time sales tax record

    Late 2022 continued a string of top income months for city of Imperial sales tax.
    With $54,517.11 returned to Imperial for the month of October, the first month of the 4th quarter now represents the second highest sales tax receipts on record, missing the all-time record by just over $60.
    At $54,581.45, August 2022 has recorded the highest monthly total since Imperial’s sales tax started in 2007.
    November and December 2022 had lower receipts than October, but the 4th quarter still finished strong with $147,704.03 in receipts.
    December neared the $50,000 mark, thanks to the Christmas gift-giving season.
    Overall, however, the 4th quarter receipts were nearly $13,000 lower than the 3rd quarter.
    When the city receives its monthly receipts, the sales tax on vehicles is separated and placed in the street department.
    The rest is split 50/50 between the economic development and community development funds. The Imperial city council has final say for earmarking funds from both accounts.
    The city’s 1% sales tax is added to the state’s 5.5% for a total of 6.5% on eligible purchases.
