Camron Lempke drives up court against Sutherland.

Longhorns’ two game-winning streak snapped at subdistricts

The Chase County boys’ basketball team entered the postseason with a two-game winning streak after victories over Bridgeport and Sutherland last week.
The Longhorns took on the C1-11’s top seed Cozad (16-7) Tuesday on the Haymakers’ home court in the first round of the subdistrict.
Chase County ended with a 45-56 loss to Cozad. A wrap up of the game will be in next week’s Republican.
CCS finally made up its Dec. 22 postponed contest Feb. 14 with Bridgeport (14-9).
Five of the Bulldogs first six field goals of the game were three pointers, but Chase County hung in there. Sophomores Camron Lempke and Tristan Jablonski scored the Longhorns’ first seven points, followed by baskets by Kade Anderson, Steven Murray and Jensen Olsen.
CCS erased its one-point deficit, 13-14, in the second quarter, starting with a three pointer by Easton Fries. Olsen and Anderson would each score six points in the quarter to leave the game tied at 28-28 going into halftime.
Chase County put the game out of reach in the third quarter. Six Longhorns would score in the quarter, including nine points by Olsen, and 3s by Murray and Colin O’Neil. The 21 point effort in the quarter gave CCS a 49-43 lead heading into the final stanza.
Olsen continued his hot night with another eight points in the fourth quarter. Anderson added a three pointer as the Longhorns traded points with Bridgeport down the stretch of the 60-54 win.
Olsen scored 25 points in the game and had four blocks and 13 rebounds, while Anderson chipped in 13 points.
CCS ended the regular season at home with a 68-29 thrashing of Sutherland (2-17).
With all three seniors, Anderson, Murray and O’Neil, starting on senior night, Chase County jumped out to a 22-8 lead. Juniors Fries and Olsen combined to score 16 first quarter points.
Six Longhorns scored in the second quarter and the CCS defense stayed strong. Chase County only gave up five second quarter points and only one field goal.
Murray and Olsen kept the offense on track in the third quarter with four points each.
Head Coach Chris Bartels was able to go to his bench in the fourth quarter and the Longhorns kept on clicking as they wrapped up the win.
Despite a dismal night from behind the arc, 1-12, CCS still finished with an effective field goal percentage of 53.9%.
As would be expected, the Longhorns dominated across the board, 52-8 in points in the paint, 32-3 in transition points and 30-5 in points off turnovers.
Eleven players pulled down a rebound for CCS in the game, leading to a 33-28 rebounding edge.
Olsen led three Longhorns in double figures with 18 points. Anderson scored 17 points and Fries rattled in 12.
