Cooper Dillan controls Mitchell’s Wyatt Sauer in their teams’ dual Friday in Chadron.

CCS wrestlers have successful trek north

Two weeks ago the Chase County wrestlers went to the Ogallala Duals and came out with a disappointing finish after a lack of practice time.
What a difference 14 days can make.
Head Coach Matt Vlasin said Chadron’s duals were overall tougher than Ogallalas, but solidifying 132 and 138 lbs. helped the Longhorns’ cause.
As wrestlers have settled into their appropriate weights, the results were apparent at Friday’s Chadron Duals, especially against Mitchell.
CCS lost to Mitchell 31-48 on Jan. 7, but beat the Tigers 45-36.
Vlasin also pointed out that Jesus Medina and Ray Murillo have picked up much needed experience and got wins Friday that they didn’t in Ogallala.
With wins over Mitchell and Chadron, CCS found itself in the championship bracket and competing for third place. The Longhorns settled for fourth, but were able to go head to head with district opponent Valentine.
Heading to Chadron for the duals and Saturday’s invite, Vlasin said it was good to see some new competition, especially district opponents like Gordon-Rushville.
His wrestlers’ successes Friday helped with their seedings Saturday.
Jaret Peterson placed first at 220 lbs. Now 30-1, Peterson remains ranked second in Class C.
Overall, CCS had six wrestlers in the consolation semifinals and four advanced to the third place match.
Luis Co placed third with a 4-1 day at 138 lbs. that included a win over Class C #4 Kyler Vincent of Gordon-Rushville.
Westyn Mendenhall also placed third. Mendenhall went 3-1 at 145 lbs. before taking third place by medical forfeit.
Thomas Reeves had four decisions Saturday. Reeves won three, including the third place match, and only lost to Chadron’s Rhett Cullers, ranked No. 7 in Class B.
At 285 lbs., Ray Murillo was 3-2 and placed fourth.
Up next
The Hitchcock County Quad has been rescheduled for Thursday, but will be a triangular that includes Sutherland after Cambridge dropped out.
On Friday CCS will head to the Medicine Valley Invite in Curtis.
Vlasin expects Sutherland and Sedgewick County/Fleming, Colorado to be tough, but said if CCS continues to wrestle as it has the last two weeks the Longhorns should be in the mix for the team title.
While there will be familiar faces at Medicine Valley, Vlasin said there will be new teams there, as well.
Picking up some wins Friday will hopefully build up the Longhorns’ confidence before the WTC/SPVA/MAC/PAC tournament in Bridgeport Feb. 2 then districts Feb. 10-11 in Mitchell.
