Second quarter sales tax tops first

It was a better second quarter of receipts compared to the first for the city of Imperial and its city sales tax income.
In all, the second quarter covering April, May and June brought in $129,679.17 to the city.
That compares to first quarter receipts of $118,501.46.
In a look at the individual monthly receipts, income grew as the second quarter progressed.
After April brought in $35,570.62, May tallied about $9,000 more while June went up by another $5,000. June was just about $2,000 short of the all-time month record set in August 2021 when $51,660.08 was received in sales tax income.
When the city receives its monthly receipts, the sales tax on vehicles is separated and placed in the street department.
The rest is split 50/50 between the economic development and community development funds. The Imperial city council has final say for earmarking funds from both accounts.
The city’s 1% sales tax is added to the state’s 5.5% for a total of 6.5% on eligible purchases.
This year, Imperial is observing its 15th year since the city sales tax started in April 2007.
