Longhorns conquer panhandle, ready to lay it on line in Omaha

The quest to repeat as state champions began Thursday in Mitchell for the Chase County girls’ track team.
The Longhorns won the district title by over 100 points, finishing with 186 points to second-place Bayard’s 75 points.
CCS qualified six individuals and all three relays.
Jordan Jablonski was the district champion in pole vault and will run on the three relays in Omaha.
Bryn McNair won the 400-meter dash, 800-meter dash and high jump, as well as running a leg on the 1,600-meter relay.
Jerzee Milner won the 100-meter dash and 100-meter hurdles. The senior was second in the 300-meter hurdles and runs on the 400-meter relay.
Lucy Spady won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. She runs a leg on the 3,200-meter relay, as well.
Ali McNair finished second in pole vault and also runs legs on the 400- and 1,600-meter relays.
Kaylie Lotspeich placed second in discus.
Other relay runners are Chloe Dillan in the 400-meter relay, Peyton Owens in the 1,600-meter relay and Olivia Spady and Landree McNair in the 3,200-meter relay.
CCS lucked out in the 3,200-meter relay and avoided a short storm that made the boys’ race miserable.
Weather conditions last Thursday did affect performances, however.
CCS Head Coach Troy Hauxwell said it was weird that the Longhorns didn’t have any additional qualifiers, but said track set ups and weather conditions across the state led to some athletes having better than average days while others had sub-par performances.
With everyone getting drenched in the early afternoon storm, Hauxwell said it was a challenge for athletes to get warmed up and stay warm for their events.
Hauxwell was especially pleased with several performances, including Lotspeich in the discus.
Hauxwell pointed out Milner’s work load and the team’s focus on the 400-meter relay rather than a win for Milner in the 300-meter hurdles.
    L. Spady’s performance in the distance races when other runners tried to draft off her then failed to outrun her to finish also stood out to Hauxwell
Classes C and D will run Friday and Saturday in Omaha. Hauxwell said he’s disappointed he won’t see athletes from Classes A and B schools run.
