Longhorns fine tuning for Thursday’s district meet

“Last week was crazy,” Chase County boys’ track coach Carl Zuege said.
That may be the understatement of the season when looking back on a week that had the Longhorns traveling to meets on four-straight days, thanks to the rescheduled SPVA meet.
“All of the meets held some importance on our schedule,” Zuege said.
CCS took athletes in 13 events to Tuesday’s Best of the Midwest meet in Sutherland. The meet brings together the top eight regional athletes or relays to compete.
“This gives us a look at some new and high level competition,” Zuege said.
Chase County’s 1,600-meter relay team, Luis Co, Stephen Murray, Easton Fries and Ryan Bernhardt, finished first.
The Longhorn bus headed to North Platte Wednesday for the NP JV Invite.
“This meet was important because it was the last JV meet, which meant the last opportunity for several of our athletes to compete this season,” Zuege said.
Then came the monkey wrench, the SPVA meet.
Zuege said Thursday’s rescheduled meet was the one that made the week really chaotic.
“Since Chase County was scheduled to host the SPVA Jr. High Meet, the decision was made to combine the high school and junior high conference meets into one meet,” Zuege said.
“It was a major undertaking by our administration, support staff and teaching staff. Obviously, the conference meet is very important to our team,” he added.
The Longhorns’ streak of seven-straight conference team titles was broken by North Platte St. Pat’s, 174-150.
Zuege said the Irish are a very talented team, but he  thought the Longhorn boys competed very well and set quite a few good marks.
“NPSP is loaded with athletes, and they did a very nice job Thursday in winning the SPVA,” Zuege said.
Individual wins went to Easton Fries in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles and Jaret Peterson in the shot put. The 1,600-meter relay team also won.
The week wrapped up Friday with the Dundy County Stratton Twilight.
“My focus on Friday was to concentrate on just one or two events for each kid, and to use the excellent weather to try to improve our PRs and get prepped for districts next Thursday,” Zuege said.
CCS cruised to the team title, 223.5-108 over Hershey.
The meet went about as well as coaches could have hoped, Zuege said, with quite a few PRs.
Fries won the 400 meter dash, Brayan Reyes the 1,600 meter run, Kade Anderson the 110 meter hurdles, Peterson shot and discus, Mason Wallin pole vault and Bernhardt long jump.
“A couple of our relays secured lane four at districts and moved into the top five in the state with our times,” Zuege added.
The 400 meter relay, Jonathan Sosa, Bernhardt, James McArthur and Dawson Mollendor, placed first, as did the 1,600-meter relay team.
Up next
CCS will now set its sights on a district title.
“We tried to manage the load on our guys the best we could throughout the week. Putting the SPVA meet smack in the middle made that a tough chore, but I thought we came out of the week healthy and prepared for districts. Now, we get back to work and fine tune for a few days before heading to Mitchell for districts,” Zuege said.
Bayard, Bridgeport, Gordon-Rushville, Hemingford, Kimball, Mitchell, Morrill and Perkins County will also be at the C-9 meet..
