WP’s Walker wins RPAC 100-meter dash

The Wauneta-Palisade track teams had their work cut out for them in the 13-team RPAC championship track meet last week, but the team brought home its fair share of medals.
WP Head Coach Dawn Doeter said it was an exciting day for the Broncos and WP competed well at the big meet.
Grant Walker had the team’s big win on the day. Walker won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.46, 0.05 seconds ahead of second place finisher Carson Glunz of Wallace.
Walker said he plans on running the 200-yard dash in upcoming meets.
WP Head Coach Dawn Doetker agreed.
“He is gradually healing and hoping he will be ready for the district track meet,” she said.
In the finals-only 300-meter hurdles, Kyle Jutten ran in lane eight of a slower heat, but still placed sixth.
Jutten also placed fourth in high jump and, with Jacksen Littrel, Grayden Sutherland and Laiden Lawler, finished seventh in the 1,600-meter relay.
WP had a scare, but two Broncos’ girls’ relay teams placed. The 400-meter relay, Alexa Sandman, Cali Cox, Halle Bardsley and Brooke Knotts, was third and the 1,600-meter relay, Knotts, Jewel Holthus, Sophia Alfayo and Ryleigh McCrumb, placed fifth.
Sandman hit a hurdle and didn’t finish the 100-meter hurdle finals. After an assessment, Sandman was allowed to compete in the 400-meter relay, although she wasn’t at 100%.
Doetker compliments Sandman’s grit and leadership, adding the 400-meter relay ran very well for the first time this season now that C. Cox and Bardsley have returned to action.
“We have missed those girls competing and are so glad to have them back. They all ran a great leg on the relay,” Doetker said.
Knotts placed fifth in the 100-meter dash and sixth in the 200-meter dash.
GraCee Goings was second in the discus, while Peyton Cox was fourth in the shot put.
McCrumb placed eighth in pole vault and set a new school record with a vault of 7’6”. Doetker said McCrumb is getting stronger and coaches are seeing exciting things coming from her.
Besides the relay, Lawler was seventh in the 400-meter dash and set four personal records.
“Laiden has come on very strong. He had an incredible meet, he is working very hard in practice as well. All of us coaches were super excited for him to accomplish this at RPAC,” Doetker said.
WP boys’ team set 12 PRs and the girls’ squad had eight.
Up next
WP had athletes on the track Tuesdy in Sutherland at the Best of the Midwest.
The week didn’t end there, however. The Broncos will travel to the Dundy County Stratton Invite Friday in Benkelman.
After that, WP will finish its preparations for the district meet May 12 in Cambridge.
