Lucy Spady immediately grabbed the lead in the 1,600-meter run and ran away from the competition. Spady brought home the traveling plaque for the win and also a 3,200-meter run victory. Legs in the winning 1,600-meter relay and 3,200-meter relays gave Spady four first-place finishes.

CCS girls claim invite title

With only one meet on the schedule last week, the Chase County girls’ track team made the most of it, winning the Don Stine Invite team title by 66 points.
Cambridge, which hosted the meet, finished second.
Organizers expected the wind to blow during the day and adjusted meet’s start time to an hour earlier.
While everyone got lucky and the wind didn’t blow very hard, some athletes were hustling back and forth between field and running events.
Head Coach Troy Hauxwell said the Longhorns cruised to a win in the 3,200-meter relay, but Jordan Jablonski was running from the event to the pole vault then to the 100-meter dash.
The work paid off for Jablonski, who finished first in the pole vault and second in the sprint. Jablonski was joined by Peyton Owens, Ali McNair and Lucy Spady in a 1,600-meter relay win.
    L. Spady had a big day with wins in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs.
With her win in the 1,600-meter race, L. Spady reclaimed the traveling plaque awarded annually to the winner of the race.
    L. Spady won the 1,600-meter run as a freshman in 2019. She didn’t have a chance to defend her title when COVID canceled the 2020 season. Last year, L. Spady finished second by 0.05.
    L. Spady was also on the winning 3,200-meter relay with Jablonski, Olivia Spady and Landree McNair.
Bryn McNair inched closer to the school high jump record with a winning jump of 5’6”. The height set the meet record.
    B. McNair also won the 400-meter dash and 800-meter run.
Jerzee Milner swept the hurdle races for CCS and helped sweep the relays by anchoring the 400-meter relay.
Chloe Dillan saw her first action of the season in the 400-meter relay. Also running was A. McNair and Ella Colson.
Kaylie Lotspeich won the discus with a toss of 105’10”.
Hauxell said the weather was great for the sprinters and jumpers and there were a lot of personal records set, but the day was less than ideal for the distance runners.
“We can’t worry about the weather, we have to adapt and compete,” Hauxwell said.
Looking over the results, Hauxwell was pleased to see not only events with multiple athletes from CCS placing, but good times from his athletes.
This was especially true as many athletes got home late Friday night from the State FFA Convention, but were at the school early to hop on the bus to Cambridge the next morning.
With the meet allowing JV and varsity entries, coaches took advantage to get as many athletes as possible a chance to compete.
That included an extra 400-meter relay team of Addi Leibbrandt, Jill Pankonin, Shalissa Bigham and Brooke Schilke.
Longhorn hurdlers were added into the mix with a second 1,600-meter relay team to help with their conditioning. Up next
The Longhorns will be at the Sutherland Invite Thursday.
Hauxwell picked out strengths from the other teams that will challenge CCS, such as Hershey’s throwers, North Platte St. Pat’s jumpers and distance runners, Perkins County’s hurdlers and Sutherland’s pole vaulters. The Sailor’s Story Rasby will also provide good competition in the sprints and middle distances.
Hauxwell wants his team focused on a great week of training heading into the meet.
Other schools attending will be Arthur County, Dundy County Stratton, Garden County, Hyannis, Paxton, Sandhills Valley and Wallace.
Field events will start at 10 a.m. CT. Running events will begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of the field events.
Hauxwell is hopeful the wind and weather won’t cause Sutherland to call off the meet.
After four days off for Easter Break, the Longhorns will be back in action Tuesday when they host the Chase County Invite.
First events begin at 9 a.m.
Coming to Imperial will be Dundy County Stratton, Garden County, Ogallala and Perkins County.
It will be good to be home and on their home track, Hauxwell said, adding that it’s fun to have elementary students come over to cheer for the athletes.
