Chase County’s Nick Rau drops in a putt as Perkins County’s Zaybreon Hanson looks on.

CCS golfers third in season’s first tournament

Tournament season took a while to get underway for the Chase County golfers.
The team opened its season April 5 at the Dundy County Invite.
Like last year, golfers battled the weather as much of the course.
Perkins County took the team title by 17 strokes over the hosts. CCS followed in third place.
Despite seniors Nick Rau and Brice Vitosh playing on the course last year, it was freshman Gavin Wisnieski who had the Longhorns’ low score at the invite.
Wisnieski put together rounds of 49 and 50, good enough for seventh place. Rau was close behind with rounds of 51 and 52 for 10th place. Vitosh was three shots back.
CCS Coach Vanessa Taylor said she was a little surprised Wisnieski had the team’s best performance, but added this is a team that pushes each other in practice and they are very competitive with each other.
“I was not surprised our individual scores were close. Even though Gavin was our low scorer for the day, Nick and Brice showed great improvement from their scores in Benkelman last year, which is a win to me. We’re all about improving and learning how to manage our shots with the weather,” Taylor said.
Jesse Krausnick and Kaden Vogt rounded out the varsity team and Matt Murray finished fourth out of the JV players.
The team stayed positive despite the tough conditions and powered through, she added.
Monday the Longhorns hosted the Chase County Invite at Enders Lake Golf Course.
Taylor said the meet started with some of the best weather the team has seen this year.
“It did become windy later in the afternoon, which impacted several team member’s scores on the back nine,” Taylor added.
CCS finished two strokes off the team medals with a fourth-place finish, but Taylor felt the Longhorns were competitive with the other teams that attended. Perkins County took the team win by six strokes over McCook A. Sutherland was third.
Two first-year team members placed in the top 15. Vogt carded rounds of 51 and 46 to finish in tenth place. Krausnick placed 12th after rounds of 51 and 49. Taylor said she was  impressed with the scores.
Murray stepped into a varsity role and finished at 106, Wisnieski shot a 109 and Rau carded a 118.
Up next
The week will continue to be busy. The Longhorns will head to Curtis Thursday for the Medicine Valley Invite at Arrowhead Meadows Golf Course.
It will be the first time CCS has traveled to the MV tournament
“I am excited to see how they respond to a course that we haven’t played before. Looking at their course layout online, it looks like they have some water hazards which is something we haven’t encountered this year thus far,” Taylor said.
The JV meet scheduled for Thursday in Bridgeport has been moved to April 22.
Tuesday the Longhorns will head to Grant for the Perkins County Invite at Pheasant Run Golf Course, then Thursday the JV team is scheduled for the Southwest Invite at Cambridge.
