Zach Herbert hands off to Ryan Bernhardt in the 1,600-meter relay. CCS took first place in the event.

CCS boys’ track team putting pieces together as season begins

The first track meet of the year it came up on the Chase County boys’ track team pretty quickly after some rough weather and spring break, CCS Head Coach Carl Zuege said.
But Zuege said it was good to get out and get some times and marks set.
“This provides us a starting point to begin tracking our progress for the season. We did have a really nice day for a meet, “ he added.
Earning first place finishes were Dawson Mollendor, 100 meters; Trevin Moreno, 1600 meters; Easton Fries, both hurdles events; and Jaret Peterson, shot put and discus.
The CCS 1,600- and 3,200 meter relay teams also took firsts. Members of the 4x400 team were Ryan Bernhardt, Kade Anderson, Luis Co and Zach Herbert, while 4x800 team members were Herber, Colin O’Neil, Tristan Jablonski and Mason Tyerman.
Out of returning athletes, CCS set 33 new personal bests at the meet.
Zuege was pleased with the efforts with pretty much all of his athletes.
“With such a young group I was really just looking to make sure that we maintained our standard of effort and competitiveness, which I think we accomplished on Thursday,” Zuege said, adding that Fries in the hurdles and Peterson in the throws had some marks that really stood out.
With unlimited entries and so many athletes to find spots for, Zuege said some kids were in their typical events and some tried new events.
“We did try to place kids in most of their regular events, but we were also trying to make some decisions with a couple of our relays, so we also tried quite a few people in the 100 and 200 in an attempt to see where our sprinters all ranked so far,” Zuege said.
CCS had 15 entries out of 21 in the 100-meter dash and 14 out of 18 entries in the 200-meter dash.
The Longhorns had multiple 400-meter relay teams, but only one team finished the race, finishing second to Perkins County by 0.05.
The competition level will kick up Saturday when Chase County heads to the varsity-only Ed Moore Invite at Ogallala.
Also attending the meet will be Alliance, Chadron, Cozad, Gothenburg, Mitchell, Ogallala and Sidney.
Zuege said this is probably the Longhorns’ toughest meet of the regular season.
“We will see some great competition and learn quite a bit about our team. I am looking forward to seeing how we stack up,” Zuege said.
While in previous years Zuege has had a pretty good idea about how CCS will place, this year he’s a little less certain and very excited to find out.
Field events will start at 10 a.m. and running events are scheduled to start at noon.
