This small building to the north of Zion Lutheran Church was taken down last week by Kruger’s Backhoe Service, allowing more space for the church’s addition.

Zion Lutheran Church moving ahead on addition

A mid to late April ground-breaking is in the plans at Imperial’s Zion Lutheran Church for a new education addition.
Adding more space for the church at 1305 Broadway has been in the plans for several years, interrupted more recently by COVID, but a building committee member said it’s now moving forward.
Plans are to add a 5,600 square foot addition to the north, with a full basement the same size, said Dale Schilke, building committee member.
Schilke is also wearing another hat with the addition plans, he said, as he works for Engineering International, the engineer and architect on the project.
Schilke said the addition will be used largely for more classroom space and an extended fellowship hall.
One office will also be built for the preschool/daycare that operates at the church, he added. The basement will include a “safe room,” providing a storm shelter during inclement weather.
The addition’s exterior will match the brick on the east side facing Broadway, with the rest of the building finished with metal siding, he said.
Church officials hope to complete the addition in April 2023.
