Election activity slows; just one new local candidate files

Final deadline for candidates arrives next week on March 1

Only a few days remain for candidates thinking about running for office to file.
The Chase County Clerk’s Office will stay open an extra hour until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, the final filing deadline.
Those office-seekers who must file with the Secretary of State also must do so by the March 1 deadline.
Jan Elliott filed for Imperial City Council, which has two seats open this year. Hers was the only filing the past week, according to Clerk Debbie Clark. Incumbent Chad Yaw filed earlier, but the council’s other incumbent Charlesa Kline did not file by the earlier deadline.
Other incumbents for city and county offices who did not file by last week’s deadline include County Assessor Dotty Bartels, County Clerk Debbie Clark, County Treasurer Cynthia Schoenberger and Imperial Mayor Dwight Coleman.
There have been no filings yet for the Chase County Commissioner Dist. 3 now held by Dennis Kunnemann, who did not file for re-election.
There are also no filings as of late Tuesday for the open Upper Republican NRD Subdist. #10 seat held by Jay Lee of Madrid. Lee also did not file for re-election.
There was some activity in state races the past week.
Third District Congressman Adrian Smith now has a Democratic challenger in David Else of Overton, who filed the past week. However, no other Republicans are challenging Smith as of late Tuesday.
Ed Dunn of Grant remains the only candidate to replace Dist. #44 State Sen. Dan Hughes with just six days left for other candidates to file.
Hughes could not seek re-election due to term limits.
The Nebraska Governor, Attorney General and Auditor are not seeking re-election. The two other state officials, Secretary of State Bob Evnen and State Treasurer John Murante, have filed. Murante was unopposed as of late Tuesday.
