WP boys fall to Maxwell to wrap up RPAC tournament

    The Wauneta-Palisade boys’ basketball team ended its RPAC tournament run with a 37-48 loss to Maxwell Jan. 25 in Wauneta.
    The Broncos couldn’t match Maxwell’s trio of first quarter three pointers and fell behind 9-15 after the game’s first eight minutes. Michael Duvel made a three pointer for WP to go with baskets by Robert Hanna and Grant Walker.
    Four Broncos, Grayden Sutherland, Ruel Malcolm, Walker and Aidan Kennicutt, scored in the second quarter. WP sent Maxwell to the charity stripe six times. The Tigers made five of those free throws and hit three field goals. WP trailed 19-27 at halftime.
    The Broncos continued to send Maxwell to the free throw line in the second half. Maxwell made 2-6 free throws in the third quarter and added three field goals to their totals. On WP’s end, Kennicutt scored four points and Malcolm added three.
    Behind 26-35 entering the fourth quarter, WP couldn’t make up the difference. Kyle Jutten rattled in a three pointer to go with baskets by Malcolm, Walker and Kennicutt. The Broncos made 3-7 free throws in the quarter. Maxwell made a three pointer and two pointer in the fourth quarter, but was also 8-8 on free throws.
    Kennicutt scored 10 points to lead WP.
    The Broncos made 3-9 free throws in the game compared to 17-22 for Maxwell.
    WP made 14 two point field goals and two three pointers.
    Maxwell hit eight field goals and five three pointers. Up next
    WP (2-15) will host Medicine Valley (13-2) Thursday.
    Friday the Broncos will travel to Sutherland (1-13).
