Broncos look for wins as RPAC looms

    Wauneta-Palisade fell in boys’ basketball action last week to Perkins County and Garden County.
    WP hosted the 9-3 Plainsmen Friday evening.
    Though four different Broncos scored in the first quarter, WP trailed 11-23 at the end of the game’s first eight minutes. Ruel Malcolm scored five of those points and Kyle Jutten, Robert Hanna and Aidan Kennicutt contributed field goals.
    Scoring slowed down in the second quarter. Hanna made two buckets for WP and Jacksen Littrel added another. Grayden Sutherland and Laiden Lawler added free throws. WP trailed 19-33 at half time.
    Malcolm made the Broncos’ only third quarter field goal. Sutherland and Jutten each made two free throws and Grant Walker added one.
    Behind six points by Sutherland, WP outscored PCS in the fourth quarter. Jutten also made a field goal and the Broncos made three free throws to round out the  37-59 loss.
    Overall, nine Broncos scored in the game. Jutten, Malcolm and Hanna each finished with seven points.
    A slow start put WP behind the eight ball right off the bat the next night at Garden County.
    WP only scored one point in the first quarter, a Kennicutt free throw.
    Trailing 1-9, the Broncos made their first field goal, a basket by Malcolm in the second quarter. Hanna added a three pointer and WP got free throws from Littrel and Kennicutt.
    Hanna scored half on WP’s 10 third quarter points. Sutherland and Kennicutt also tossed in baskets.
    Jutten added four points in the fourth quarter of the 26-47 loss.
    Hanna ended up with 10 points for WP.

    Next on the Broncos’ schedule is a trip to 6-6 Paxton Thursday.
    Saturday will be the opening round of the RPAC tournament in Hayes Center. WP is seeded seventh and will play second seeded Wallace at 11:45 a.m. MT.
    The Broncos will host games Tuesday. WP will play either Hitchcock County or Maxwell in the next round.
