Cali Cox drives into the key against Arapahoe at last week’s holiday tourney.

Wins tough to come by for WP girls

A three-game winning streak ended for the Wauneta-Palisade girls’ basketball team at the Arapahoe Holiday Tournament last week.
WP fell to 3-5 Blue Hill in the tournament’s opening game.
Peyton Cox and Alexa Sandman combined to score eight of WP’s 11 first quarter points. The Broncos trailed 11-14 at the end of the first quarter.
The middle quarters doomed WP. The Broncos only hit one field goal in the second and third quarters combined. One free throw in each of those quarters gave WP four total points in 16 minutes.
Trailing 15-33 entering the fourth quarter, the Broncos got rolling again.
Cali Cox and P. Cox powered the WP offense in the fourth quarter. The duo combined to score the Broncos’ first 14  points. Sandman added a three-point play to round out scoring in the 32-45 loss.
    P. Cox was the only Bronco in double figures, finishing with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Sandman added eight points.
In their second meeting of the season, WP fell to Arapahoe in the consolation game of the tournament. The Broncos had beaten Arapahoe 59-46 at the Cattle Trail Tournament in December.
Four Broncos scored in the first quarter to help WP to an early 11-9 lead.
Chloe Stehno put four points on the board and P. Cox added three. Field goals by Sandman and Halle Bardsley help the Broncos’ cause.
Sandman scored 12 of WP’s 13 points in the second quarter. Arapahoe, on the other hand, had six players score in the quarter. The Broncos trailed 24-28 at halftime.
The scoring trend continued for WP in the third quarter. P. Cox scored all eight of the Broncos points, but WP’s defense held the Warriors to six points.
With WP trailing by two, 32-34, entering the fourth quarter, both teams went to work at the charity stripe as the game wore on. P. Cox and C. Cox combined to make three field goals in the quarter and Arapahoe made four.
The biggest difference came at the free throw line. WP made 7-15 in the fourth quarter compared to 10-15 for Arapahoe.
WP took a 47-53 loss in the game.
    P. Cox scored 20 points and had 13 rebounds. Sandman added 13 points and seven rebounds.
WP was 0-8 from behind the arc in the game, while Arapahoe made 5-17 three pointers.
