The 2022 calendar being produced by the Chase County Historical Society features events and celebrations of years past. The cover spotlights a May 1947 celebration at Enders Dam after dirt work for the structure was started earlier that year.

Historical Society’s 2022 calendar highlights county’s celebrations

With 2022 just around the corner, the Chase County Historical Society is completing work on its annual calendar.
The 2022 edition highlights some interesting events and celebrations in Chase County, said Charley Colton, Historical Society president.
It’s always their plan to center each year’s calendar around a theme, Colton said, one that includes all of the communities in the county if possible. That depends on available photos, he said.
The new calendar is titled Chase County Events & Celebrations, and people will discover some interesting history about the county, he said, centered around its celebrations.
Each month features a celebration/event photo, as well as individual days marked with significant happenings or anniversaries.
Colton said Fourth of July was always a big event in days gone by. The 2022 calendar includes photos of July 4 happenings in both Imperial and Champion.
One of the months features an Old Settlers Picnic at the Wauneta Lake in 1908. The lake is gone now and houses are built on its former location, Colton noted.
The Hall farm in the Lamar area is the subject on the November page, highlighting the end of corn harvest that year.
Other events featured on  the calendar pages include Wauneta’s Walking Cake Day celebration, an early 1960s Back to School Parade in Imperial, a Decoration Day celebration and even a “Hanging of a Horse Thief” reenactment coordinated by Marion Minick at the light dam.
At the back of the calendar a page is included that gives more background on each of the large photos featured each month, he added.
The 2022 calendar is the society’s sixth edition, and Colton said its $15 price is the same as previous years.
The first Historical Society calendar was printed for 2017 and featured “town views.”
Since then, the calendars were centered around farms and ranches, churches, schools, and last year, barns.
Colton said they were limited in on-site sales last year due to COVID, but still were able to sell between 100 and 125 calendars, about the same as earlier years.
He’s planning to have them for sale at the Vision of Trees event in Champion Dec. 4-5.
Anyone interested in purchasing a calendar can also contact him at 308-883-8584.
He said the historical society is always looking for photographs of county history. Anyone cleaning out a room or going through scrapbooks who finds historical photos can also contact Colton.
He said they will scan the photo for the museum and return it to the owner.
