Second quarter sales tax betters first three months

After a sluggish 2021 first quarter in city sales tax receipts, Imperial city officials were happy to see a bounce-back second quarter.
Monthly sales tax receipts for April, May and June were up more than $13,700 compared to the first quarter months—January, February and March. Figures are released by the Nebraska Dept. of Revenue.
The second quarter months brought in $141,021.79, with April’s $50,568.40 in receipts the highest individually for the quarter. The last time a month’s receipts eclipsed the $50,000 mark was June 2020.
May brought in sales tax of $40,531.74, while June concluded the second quarter with $49,921.65 in receipts.
When the city receives its monthly sales tax receipts, the tax on vehicles is separated out and placed in the street department. The rest is then split 50/50 between the LB 840 economic development fund and the community development fund. The city council has final say on what funds are awarded to whom.
Figures shown in the chart include totals before the vehicle tax is removed and put in the street fund.
The city’s 1% sales tax is added to the state’s 5.5% for a total of 6.5% on eligible purchases.
