Hunter Swink is all smiles after pulling in this catch at Ike’s Fishing Day Saturday at Champion Lake.

Lifetime permits won by pair of youngsters at Kids Fishing Day

Two young boys are probably still smiling this week after winning lifetime Nebraska fishing permits in Champion Saturday.
Adler Chubb and Dreighton Cook, both of Imperial, were the lucky winners after registering for the Ron Berry Memorial Kids Fishing Day at Champion Lake.
After 16 youths who signed up for the day fished from 10 a.m. to noon, Ike’s members served a lunch to about 60 people, said Tom Elder, Ike’s secretary-treasurer.
While Ike’s members were setting up for the prize give-aways, the youths fished some more after lunch. Youths could bring their own equipment, but the Nebraska Game and Parks had a trailer with rods and reels on site youths could also use, Elder noted.
In addition to the lifetime permits, a number of other prizes were awarded to participants. There were more prizes than youths registered, Elder said, so they were able to hand out prizes to other youths not in the Fishing Day’s 8 to 13 age group.
Elder expressed appreciation to the Logan Bauman Foundation and Game and Parks which made the lifetime permit prizes possible. Several other businesses and individuals donated prizes or money as well, he said.
Eight to 10 Ike’s members helped at Saturday’s event, an annual project named in memory of longtime Isaac Walton League (Ike’s) member and past president Ron Berry.
