Ryleigh McCrumb placed second in two races and ran a leg on the WP 1,600 meter relay.

WP’s Walker heading to Omaha in 100, 200

The D-7 district track meet was a tough one for the Wauneta-Palisade track teams, but the Broncos will be represented at the state track meet Wednesday and Thursday.
Grant Walker took second place in the 100 and 200 meter dashes behind Bertrand’s Ethan Klingenberg. The top two finishers in the races automatically qualified for the state meet.
WP came close to sending its girls’ 400 meter relay team, but, with only the first place team automatically qualifying, the Broncos’ second place time wasn’t fast enough for a berth.
Braxton McKinney just missed out on making the trip to Omaha after a third place finish in the high jump. The top two finishers  automatically qualified for the state meet.
McKinney and Dundy County-Stratton’s Jackson Kerchal each jumped 5’10” with Medicine Valley’s Hayden Kramer clearing 6’0” to place first. With fewer misses, Kerchal placed second.
“We did very well with a few disappointments,” WP Head Dawn Doetker said.
“It was so close in the high jump for Braxton and the girls’ 4x100 relay,” she added.
Also placing for the girls’ team at the May 12 meet were Haylee Sandman, fourth in the 100 meter dash; Cali Cox, fourth in the long jump; Alexa Sandman, fourth in the 100 meter hurdles; Ryleigh McCrumb, fifth in the 400 and 800; Zoey Boos, sixth in the 1,600 meter run and the girls 1,600 meter relay.
Kyle Jutten placed fifth in the 100 meter high hurdles for the boys’ squad.
The WP boys set six PRs and the girls set seven personal bests.
Doetker said Walker’s times look good heading into state, but the junior will have to take care of business in Omaha.
“The goal is to make finals in both the 100 and 200. Then in finals, bring home medals,” Doetker said.
Walker will run in the 100 prelims at 11:20 a.m. CT Wednesday. The 200 prelims will be at 1:20 p.m. CT that afternoon.
Finals for both will be Thursday at 11:20 a.m. CT and 12:25 p.m. CT.
