June’s Smokin’ event moved one week later

Smokin’ on Broadway is now set for the last Saturday in June.
Event Chairman Jack Schnieder said the BBQ cooking contest and many other fun events are now planned for Saturday, June 26, at Imperial’s city square.
Two committee members had conflicts on the earlier announced date of June 19, he said, so it was moved a week later.
Initially begun as a cooking contest with four cuts of meat, Smokin’ on Broadway has expanded to include a day full of events capped off by an evening concert.
Schnieder said he’s already seeing a lot of interest in the cooking contest, which also includes a division for beans.
With several other BBQ cooking events in the area this summer, he expects interest here to be high.
And with the many other events being organized to complement the BBQ event, he’s looking forward to June.
“We’re looking forward to a full slate of activities,” he said.
With last summer’s cancellation due to COVID-19, he believes people are getting out enjoying events like Smokin’ once again.
One of the major new additions this year will be a free BBQ feed in the evening before the concert. It’s a thank-you, he said, to the public for supporting local businesses during COVID-19.
Other events will include a salsa competition, youth bike parade, a taco-making contest and cornhole tournament. Inflatables are being secured for the kids’ jumping fun on the grounds.
More events in the works and sponsors are being secured, he said.
