WP well represented at Colby’s Art on the Oasis

Wauneta-Palisade freshman Sophia Alfayo placed first in the high school painting division and WP art teacher Danny Schluckebier first in the professional sculpture division at Colby’s annual Art on the Oasis.
Held at Colby Community College in early March, artwork professional, amateur and high school divisions is judged. This year’s judge was Fort Hays State University sculpture professor Tobias Flores.
WP was the only Nebraska school at the show and was joined by Colby, Decatur Community, Hoxie, Oakley, Phillipsburg and Wheatland-Grinnell.
Alfayo’s winning acrylic painting was titled “Creative Mind.”
WP’s Sonya Behrends, GraCee Goings, Angyelina Keenan, Samara Alfayo and Kate Parrish also took artwork.
“The WP students that entered artwork are all very creative and always excited to push themselves further. I expect more great things as they continue to grow and be more creative and better their techniques,” Schluckebier said.
He had high praise for the show.
“The Colby art show is always very well assembled and always has a great turn out for great student work,” Schluckebier said. He credited CCC’s Rebel Mahieu and Suzanne Schielke and their art students with a terrific job organizing and setting up the event.
“Great people, great students, a lot of great artwork and just a great creative environment,” Schluckebier said.
