City sets bid date for summer paving projects

Street paving is on the docket for summer in Imperial after the city council approved two projects and a bid date Monday night.
In the plans are concrete paving of two blocks on Holland Street, from Cape Street north to 3rd Street (including the 3rd St. intersection), and the paving of 2nd Street from Orsa Street east to Highway 61.
Specs are being finalized by Miller & Associates for a 2 p.m. CT bid opening on April 14 at their Kearney office.
At Monday’s meeting, Luke Dutcher with the engineering firm explained the projects, noting the engineer’s estimate for both was between $950,000 and $1.35 million.
The council favored splitting the projects into three options for bidding—the Holland St. paving, the East 2nd St. paving or a combined bid for both.
Dutcher believes the projects will likely take place late summer so will not interfere with the ball season at Schroeder Park. Holland St. borders those ball fields.
The paving plans along Holland include a sidewalk on the west side that will connect the two smaller ballfields, he said.
Dutcher also said the bids could request that 2nd Street’s paving be done first to alleviate any Schroeder Park interference.
Homes along those streets will be without driveway access for a time, he said.
He expects the paving to be completed by the first of November.
More on Monday’s meeting will be in a story next week.
