Shelco Construction of Paxton and Adams Lumber in Grant teamed up for the concrete paving project on Road 749 to Imperial Beef. The project passed the halfway point Tuesday with completion expected by Saturday. More than 4,000 yards of concrete is being used for the 1.25-mile project.
Paving on Imperial Beef road heading toward completion
Despite some cold temperatures last week, the pouring of concrete for the new 749 Road to Imperial Beef began last Thursday.
Mother Nature has cooperated nicely this week with temperatures into the 60s and 70s.
On Tuesday, progress had moved past the halfway mark on the 1.25 mile stretch.
Shelco Construction of Paxton is the contractor for the project with Adams Lumber of Grant providing more than 4,000 yards of concrete for the project.
Shelco owner Sheldon Giesbrecht said they plan to finish the pour by the end of the day Saturday.
The cost for the $800,000+ project is being split, with Imperial Beef paying for 25% and Chase County paying for the balance.
By converting the heavily- traveled road to concrete, the county expects to save $50,000 annually in maintenance costs. In addition, it reduces the county’s liability exposure.
Giesbrecht and Adams Lumber owner Chad Leibbrandt both said this is the largest project of this kind they have ever undertaken.
Both said they have experienced great cooperation working with each other.
To pull off such a big project, Leibbrandt said they brought in extra concrete trucks, running a total of seven throughout the pour.
Both also noted this was a local team effort between all parties, along with the importance of keeping the project dollars in the local area. When an out-of-area contractor and/or supplier gets the bid, that money goes elsewhere.
Having a paved road to Imperial Beef will be a benefit for truckers and for local farmers who haul silage and grain into the facility.
