S.C.O.R.E. camp another event falling victim to COVID-19

Chase County Schools’ Education Foundation decided, due to COVID-19 concerns, to suspend  the S.C.O.R.E. camp in June 2021 and proceed with plans for June 2022.
S.C.O.R.E. stands for Science Camps Offer Rewarding Experiences.
“We have spent hours discussing and brainstorming on how we could proceed ahead with SCORE for 2021. However, we agree the variables are just too many,” said S.C.O.R.E. co-director Kim Spady.
“The planning process is a long one and with all the current uncertainty right now, we know that waiting until 2022 is a wise decision,” added co-director Charlesa Kline.
Camp plans started months ago with gathering ideas for theme, curriculum and presenters. But, there was difficulty contacting presenters and instructors, and some were unable to make a commitment. Many presenters rolled their appearances from the summer of 2020 over to 2021, as well.
“We don’t want to compromise the quality of the camp for the students,” foundation board treasurer Sheila Stromberger added.
The board’s decision was not taken lightly.
“We know the community of Imperial wholeheartedly supports and appreciates the continued excellence S.C.O.R.E. has provided students,” Kline said.
S.C.O.R.E is sponsored by the Chase County Education Foundation, and designed to promote educational and exciting programs and activities for young scientists and inspire them with hands-on activity.
S.C.O.R.E. requires a staff of 17 who spend numerous months planning and organizing for the every-other-summer camp for students completing grades 1-6. The camp has been conducted with a full capacity of 330 students from several states.
The camp relies on out-of-area presenters, as well as local talented individuals.
Thousands upon thousands of volunteers have contributed their time, talents and resources to make S.C.O.R.E. a continuous success.
“We are looking forward to S.C.O.R.E. in 2022,” said Spady and Kline.
