Chamber making plans for community barbecue

Members of the Chamber of Commerce got together to find a way to say thank-you to Imperial residents for supporting the community during the COVID-19 outbreak.
An idea was put to the chamber to have a community barbecue.
“We voted and the chamber was 100% behind the idea,” said Chamber President Jack Schnieder.
While the chamber will be paying for meat and other items, the Rotary will supply members to help with serving.
The tentative date for the event is Saturday, Oct. 3, in the outdoor space by the city offices.
Schnieder said the meal will consist of pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans and potato chips. They are planning to serve about 1,500 people.
Schnieder and the chamber is currently in communication with Happy Jacks and Mark Brown, previous winners of the barbecue contest at Smokin’ on Broadway, to smoke pork butts for the event.
“We’re going to purchase meat, half-and-half, from the local grocery stores,” Schnieder said.
The event is still in the planning stages and the date will be confirmed by the ability to have a large crowd event that meets the state’s Directed Health Measures.
