Requests for early voting ballots way up; deadline to apply is May 1

    Not surprisingly, requests for early voting ballots are up considerably in Chase County.
    On Tuesday, the County Clerk’s office had already received 675 requests for early voting in next month’s May 12 Primary, or 27% of Chase County’s 2,442 registered voters.
    In comparison, 137 early voting ballots were requested for the 2018 Primary, said County Clerk/Election Commissioner Debbie Clark.
    Clark said she and other county clerks in Nebraska were caught off guard a bit when the state sent out the early voting ballot request form to all voters a couple weeks ago.
    With the COVID-19 concerns and then the state’s mailing to all voters, Clark said that left them with a shortage of the large envelopes in which to mail ballots back to voters.
    “I just want voters to know that we have received their requests and not to be concerned,” Clark said.
    “They may not get their ballots back right away, but they can expect them as soon as possible.”
    She called the company that supplies their envelopes and has been assured Chase County’s request is at the top of the list.
    Voters must have their request in for early voting ballots by May 1. Clark said there is information on the mailed form to reply to her email (clerk@chase.nacone.org), voters can send them back through the post office or place in the drop box at the courthouse’s west entrance.
    After voting is done, ballots must be returned by 7 p.m. the evening of the May 12 election or before, she said.
    For people who need assistance and want to vote early, Wendy Moe at the clerk’s office said they can call ahead to the clerk’s office, 308-882-7500, and make arrangements to vote early in the office.
