City streets get new layer of armor coating

Workers were out early Tuesday morning, putting down a layer of armor coating on city streets.
B&H Paving Inc. of Scott City, Kansas was in charge of the roadwork this year.
The work started around 5 a.m. on Tuesday, Public Works Director Pat Davison said.
Davison said the early start time was due to the workers trying to beat the heat.
The armor coating process includes laying down a layer of oil, followed by a half inch of crushed rock.
“(Armor coating) helps fill cracks and extends the life of the roads,” Davison said.
“It all depends on price of rock and oil,” he added. “That tells us how many blocks we can do.”
Davison estimated that 35-40 blocks would be done this year in Imperial.
“We try to rotate around town,” he said. “We’ll do a different part of town each year.”
Davison said they will go through four tankers of oil and approximately 1,000 tons of crushed rock.
“Whenever that runs out that’s all we’ll do,” he said.
