School called off Wednesday, Thursday for tourney

It’s a big deal for a team to qualify for the state basketball tournament.
That’s why administrators at Chase County Schools cancelled classes on Wednesday and Thursday next week after the boys’ basketball team punched their ticket to the state tournament.
Chase County won its district title game Saturday night over Amherst, which sends them to the eight-team Class C2 state tourney next week.
“We will be calling off school for both Wednesday and Thursday of next week so people have an opportunity to go down and support the boys in Lincoln,” said Supt. Adam Lambert.
“It is important that we celebrate these achievements when they happen. Basketball isn’t the only activity seeing success and we support all of our activities, but it is one of our activities that draws a significant crowd,” he said.
The Longhorns’ first game will be Wednesday, March 10, at 4 p.m. CT against Yutan at Lincoln Northeast.
Mike Sorensen, 7-12 principal, said classes on Tuesday, March 9, will be held on a normal schedule.
After that, there will be no CCS classes Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, March 10-12.
The school’s 2020-21 schedule had a 1:30 p.m. early out Thursday, March 11, for the end of the third quarter. No classes were scheduled Friday, March 12, for spring break.
Supt. Lambert said he is confident CCS will meet the state-required attendance hours expected on an annual basis.
“If we don’t meet the hours, there are some leniencies in place for districts who can’t meet those expectations, due to COVID, but our goal all year has been to keep students in school and not allow our students to fall behind,” he added.
He said the staff has done an amazing job catching students up from missed learning during spring 2020, “and getting students back on track.”
