Nebraska wins bowling national championship

The Nebraska women’s bowling team won its sixth national championship Saturday.
The Huskers defeated Arkansas State in the championship match 4-1 at Kansas City, Missouri.
Nebraska lost their first match of regional play April 7 to Medaille College, but bounced back to win seven straight matches in the next four days to take the championship.
Nebraska reeled off a win against Mount St. Mary’s, avenged its loss to Medaille College, beat Vanderbilt twice, then beat Arkansas State and  McKendree to advance to the championship match where it faced Arkansas State once more.
After losing the first game of the championship match 217-224, Nebraska bounced back and took the next four games of the best-of-seven match 235-194, 201-190, 179-162 and 198-170.
It’s Nebraska’s first bowling title since 2015 and its sixth since 2004.
The win is Nebraska’s eighth title since becoming a varsity sport in 1998 and ties men’s gymnastics for the most of any Nebraska program. Huskers bowlers have been in 10 national championship matches.
It’s lineup consisted of senior Michelle Guarro, sophomore Gwen Maeha, redshirt freshman Kayla Verstraete, junior Cassidy Ray and sophomore Crystal Elliott. Each bowler rolls two frames per match in order.
Nebraska Head Coach Paul Klempa took over the program in 2019 after being a Husker assistant.
The Huskers’ season started in late January and Nebraska only had five regular season tournaments. The NCAA tournament was the only tournament Nebraska won this season..
