Zion Lutheran Church moves toward building expansion

Zion Lutheran Church in Imperial has been planning on an expansion to the existing building for a long time, said Pastor David Kahle.
“This isn’t a recent thing. We’ve been working on doing this for years,” he said.
The expansion will be built to the north where the playground is now.
There will be a basement under the ground level addition, said Pastor Kahle.
The basement will incorporate a “storm shelter-rated” area plus bathrooms and some classrooms.
The main level will be used for the existing pre-school and day care as well as a Sunday school area for the younger children.
There will also be new bathrooms and a storage area, he said.
“We’ve been short on classrooms for years, so it will be really nice having more room,” he added.
The cost for everything has changed—prices have increased so much that it has upset our original bids, said Pastor Kahle.
“We are moving forward in preparation to eventually start building the addition. Adjustments will have to be made due to cost changes and a contractor hired,” he said.
The church members will continue holding fundraisers to pay for the expansion.
“We didn’t start this project overnight, and it probably won’t finish overnight,” he laughed.
