Truck, semi crash on Highway 6, west of Wauneta

There was an automobile accident that was called in at approximately 3:25 p.m. on Dec. 11, 2023 due west of Wauneta on Highway 6. Two vehicles were involved with the accident. The first was a 2002 Chevy Silverado pulling a flatbed driven by Wauneta resident Dayna Scherbarth, 34. The second was a semi-trailer truck hauling potatoes driven by Joseph Gilbertson, 53. None of the drivers were under the influence and no fatalites occurred, though Mr. Gilbertson sustained back injuries during the crash and had to be transported to the CHI Health Good Samaritan hospital in Kearney, Nebraska.
The accident occurred around mile marker 41 on Highway 6. A slower moving vehicle was driving in front of the vehicles driven by Scherbarth and Gilbertson, respectively. Gilbertson attempted to pass Scherbarth, but she simultaneously began to merge into the same lane. The semi clipped the Chevy’s flatbed and the larger vehicle was sent into the ditch on the side of the road. Then, it hit the embankment of a field entrance, causing the vehicle to crash by turning over and landing on the driver side. The Chevy and flatbed escaped with minimal damage, although the truck and semi-trailer were totaled.
Because of the positioning of the trailer (Blocking the highway) and the fact that Sinner’s Body Shop is the only bodyshop around for miles with large enough equipment, the highway was closed down and the cleanup of the highway took from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.
