Tenth annual Chili Cook-Off promises to treat taste buds

The Chamber of Commerce is, once again, sponsoring the Chili Cook-off later this month.
The contest, now in its 10th year, will be held March 18 at the Imperial city gym.
The chili should be prepared in a four or six quart crock pot, said Jack Schnieder, contest coordinator.
“The chili will be judged on color, aroma, texture, flavor and heat,” he said.
Schnieder said he encourages chili chefs to decorate their table area for the event.
“If needed, the best decorations will be used as a tiebreaker,” he said.
Set up will be at 5 p.m., judging at 5:30 p.m. and public tasting will begin at 6 p.m.
It is requested that a copy of the recipe should accompany each chili entry to be included in Imperial’s award-winning chili recipes booklet.
First place winner will receive $60 in Chamber Bucks; second place $40; third place $20 and the People’s Choice winner will receive a 10th annual Chili Cook-Off apron, Schnieder said.
“Advance registration is greatly appreciated, and each entry will be sharing a table space with a competitor,” he added.
Schnieder said he is already receiving registrations, and some of his regulars are planning on changing up their recipes.
“So you better step up your game,” he said.
The community is invited to stop in and taste some of the finest chili in southwest Nebraska, he added.
