After pulling a 72-year-old man out, Imperial firefighters work to remove a pet cat in the submerged vehicle after it left the road and ended up in this reuse pit.

One occupant flown out after vehicle accident near Lamar

The Chase County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call last Thursday at 6 a.m. reporting a one-vehicle accident, three miles east of the Nebraska/Colorado state line.
The Imperial Volunteer Fire Department and EMS responded to the scene at the Highway 6 and Road 313 intersection, along with Chase County Chief Deputy Mike Dukes and Sheriff Kevin Mueller.
Once on scene, Mueller said they found a vehicle on its top in a reuse pit with about four feet of water.
The investigation determined that 21-year-old Kristen Cisneros from Valparaiso, Indiana was traveling west on Highway 6 in a 2016 Ford Fusion when she apparently fell asleep and went into the south ditch.
After waking up, Mueller said she over-corrected, causing the vehicle to go into the north ditch, hit an embankment and go airborne. The vehicle went nose-first into a reuse pit and flipped onto its top, he said.
The driver was able to get out of the car and flag down another motorist, who called 911. The passenger Jessie Cisneros, 72, also of Valparaiso, Indiana was still in the vehicle and was removed by the firemen along with  a pet cat.
IVFD First Asst. Chief Brad Wheeler said Cisneros’ face was in the water when they got to him, but he was conscious after being pulled out.
Both occupants were transported to the Chase County Community Hospital by Imperial EMS. Jessie  Cisneros was flown out to another medical facility in Denver due to his injuries. The driver was released a short time later, Mueller said.
The vehicle was totalled, Mueller said.
