Low numbers temporarily close Benkelman theater

The marquee at Benkelman’s Zorn theater is dark after the decision to close the theater for the season.
The Benkelman cultural arts board said it’s become difficult to book movies which has led to fewer patrons.
The age and condition of the Zorn building has also caused concern with the board.
A statement said the board will meet after Labor Day to discuss the future of the theater.
Benkelman, Imperial and Wauneta theaters all book their movies through Main Street Theaters of Omaha.
Richard “Pudge” Hamilton, manager of the Chateau Theater in Wauneta, said he was worried small crowds would influence the distributor.
Wauneta had between 10 and 20 attendees for matinee showings of Spirit Untamed Saturday and Sunday.
Imperial Clerk/Administrator Jo Leyland said numbers have been down in Imperial, but Main Street Theaters hasn’t said anything about not sending movies.
As movie companies start releasing bigger movies, Leyland is hopeful attendance numbers start picking up again.
