Incumbents are facing Feb. 15 deadline to file

No new incumbents for local offices in Chase County filed the past week, and time is getting short.
Potential candidates currently serving in an elected office have until Tuesday to get paperwork submitted.
Only one non-incumbent candidate filed the past week at the Chase County Clerk’s Office, while a candidate from the area filed for the District #44 legislative race.
Rebecca Bernard of Imperial has put her name on the line as a candidate for Chase County Treasurer.
The first candidate for state senator for the 44th District filed with the Nebraska Secretary of State’s office the past week.
Ed Dunn of Grant made it official—he’s seeking the state legislative seat being vacated by Sen. Dan Hughes of Venango.
As of Tuesday, Dunn was the only candidate who’s filed for the District #44 seat.
Hughes is unable to seek re-election due to term limits. He is now serving his eighth and final term in the Nebraska Unicameral.
After the 2020 census, most of Perkins County was moved into District #42. However, the southwest part of the Perkins County, including Grant and Venango, remains in District #44, as does all of Chase County.
Dunn had announced months ago he intended to run for the office.
Filing deadlines loom
Incumbent office-holders are facing next week’s  Feb. 15 deadline to file. They must file on the earlier date even if they are seeking a different elected position.
All other candidates have until March 1 to file.
There are also elections this November for village boards, power district boards and others, but those offices have later filing deadlines in the summer, said County Clerk Debbie Clark.
