Improvements to Champion road discussed

The county’s one and six year road plans were approved at the March 9 Chase County Commissioners’ meeting.
A plan for the Champion road was discussed, including discussion on when it was paved. It is believed to have been updated in the 1970s.
Current improvements may cost around $2.5 million, but the commissioners felt, with the few improvements that have been made since its paving, that amount prorated over 50 years was reasonable.
Jeff Tidyman with Engineering International said his company will line up an excavator to dig into the cracks in the Wauneta dam. The hope is the cracks are caused by erosion and don’t go completely through the dam.
The commissioners also heard cost estimates for striping county highways at $500 per mile for a center line, and armor coating the two miles of new millings on Avenue 331 at $80,000.
Following the public hearing and roads discussion, Bart Stromberger and Dean Settje provided a copy of the plan for their proposed feedlot. The plan included two phases over the course of three years.
The commissioners will review the plan then approve or deny Stromberger’s conditional use permit extension at their next meeting.
Abby Cyboron, Matt Musgrove and Shawn Jaeger with Chase County Community Hospital presented the commissioners with a check for $831,356 as partial repayment for the $1.5 million the county provided for expenses with the proposed building project. The money was from the Medicare reimbursement CCCH received.
CCCH has received $3.7 million in COVID money for capital projects. The hospital has spent $1.9 million and, running out of projects to spend it on, will not be able use all of it.
The board also spent time during the meeting discussing courthouse storage options. With space running low, the commissioners tossed around rearranging offices and possibly moving the roads department to the new county building that houses the extension offices.
The next meeting of the commissioners will be Tuesday at 8 a.m. in the courthouse.
