Imperial’s Smokin’ on Broadway’s on the books June 19

Evening ‘thank-you’ BBQ being considered as additional event

A word used in many conversations the last year is “fluid.”
Since COVID-19 reared its ugly head, there seem to be changes every day, but things do appear to be improving.
“We’re kinda walkin’ on egg shells with situations still somewhat fluid, but I think we’re headed in a good direction for planning ‘Smokin’ on Broadway,’” said Jack Schnieder, event coordinator for the Imperial chamber.
Last year’s Smokin’ on Broadway was cancelled.
Working from a positive outlook, planning has begun for this year’s BBQ event, he said.
The date set for Smokin’ on Broadway is Saturday, June 19.
“We started sending out letters this week for sponsorship, and we also began the search for concert entertainment,” Schnieder said.
There are plans for plenty of fun activities for all ages throughout the day.
“After having to cancel last year’s event, we want this year to be even better,” said Schnieder.
The rules have not changed much from previous years, he said.
There’s a $200 entry fee for the smoked meat competition.
The meats in the competition will include brisket, pulled pork, pork ribs and sausage, and all cooking units must be wood-fired.
Entries must be made two weeks in advance in order to get meat ordered.
“We are also planning a baked bean contest,” Schnieder said.
For baked bean entries, contact Schnieder for details at 308-882-4363.
Judging will begin at 1 p.m. on June 19 with public sampling starting at 4 p.m.
Masks will not be required.
“The Chamber of Commerce is considering sponsoring a free evening BBQ to say thank-you for supporting local businesses during the pandemic,” Schnieder said.
The meal would be made up of pulled pork sandwiches, BBQ baked beans, chips and a drink.
Watch for more information at a later date.
