Horseshoe tourneys see some repeat champions

A pair of horseshoe tournaments at the Chase County Fair fielded some familiar teams, and winners.
Ten teams competed in Friday’s open contest, while eight teams signed up for the Chase County competition on Saturday.
First, second and third place winners in each tournament took home $120, $100 and $80, respectively.
Each day’s tournament was held in a round robin format, with the best records earning the top three award payouts.
Taking the top three spots in Friday’s open contest were Dave Cooper and Paula Norman of Colorado, first; Justin Hughes and Steve Nein, Colorado, second; and Terry White and Gary White, Ogallala, third.
The Chase County contest’s top three spots were won by Kody and Caleb Weiss, first; Jeff Lempke and Lance Kimble, second; and Cathy Schilke and Shawna Bigham, third.
After racking up 148 points, Kody and Caleb Weiss’ names will be inscribed on the Tom Hayes Memorial High Point Trophy presented by Nutrien Ag Solutions, where Hayes was employed. The trophy remains in the Nutrien office, and each winner received a soft-sided cooler and a Yeti cup.
Hayes, who died in June 2019, was an avid horseshoe contest participant at the fair, and helped coordinate it several years.
Janiel Kimble coordinated both horseshoe contests this year.
