Food pantry’s new hours reflect work schedules

In an effort to be more convenient for working families, the Chase County Food Pantry in Imperial has changed its hours.
Starting March 23, the pantry will be open every week on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m.
The pantry has been open in the past on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 11 a.m.
Volunteer Carolyn Lee said the hours were changed to make it easier for employed people to utilize the pantry.
Since COVID-19, how the food is distributed has also changed a bit, she added.
Now, when someone comes to request food, they are given a box filled with food that includes a large range of items, including meat. If they have some specific requests and the pantry has it, that food will be added, she said.
Before, people made food selections from a checklist.
“They do not come inside the pantry room anymore,” she added.
Using COVID relief funds the pantry was awarded, they are in the process of acquiring its fourth freezer, which makes it possible to store more meat.
The pantry is located in the city gym, with entrance through the building’s south doors. Anyone can request food; there are no income restrictions, she said.
When asked if there is a need for food donations, Lee said they are “bursting at the seams” right now. The pantry will also be stocking some new food items in the near future.
“People have been very generous,” she said.
