County gets second opinion on road options

Roads Supt. Balderson’s resignation accepted

The Chase County Commissioners’ search for how to repair the county’s road south of Wauneta and south of Champion continues.
The commissioners have heard from Engineering International’s Jeff Tidyman in past meetings with suggestions and heard the opinion of civil engineer Toney Krajewski at the Oct. 12 commissioners’ meeting.
Krajewski offered options and estimates for the county to review.
The commissioner discussions have included the possibility of using a fabric under the overlay.
Krajewski was not a fan of the idea and said the state uses a spray-on product.
In other roads discussion, the board voted 2-1 to accept the resignation of road foreman Mark Balderston. Jacci Brown and Dennis Kunnemann voted yes and Duane Dinnel voted no. Balderston had been road foreman since May 10.
Kunnemann and Dinnel are in favor of replacing Balderston, while Brown does not feel the position is necessary.
In other business, Emergency Manager Duane Dreiling and Sheriff Kevin Mueller sat down with the commissioners to discuss purchasing a new drone for Dreiling. The county’s current drone could be passed on to the sheriff’s office.
The commissioners asked that the research be done to determine if the drone could be used by the assessor’s office to take fly-over land pictures.
Meeting with Deputy Co. Attorney Rory Roundtree, it was discussed that several juvenile diversion claims were turned into the state too late, leaving the county to cover the cost.
Matt Musgrove and Abby Cyboron of Chase County Community Hospital gave the board the details of the hospital’s audit.
The next meeting of the commissioners will be Tuesday at 8 a.m. in the courthouse.
