County delays action on conditional use permits

Chase County Commissioners Jacci Brown, Duane Dinnel and Dennis Kunnemann put off acting on a resolution to change zoning and livestock regulations for conditional use permits (CUPs) at their April 27 meeting.
Without any representative from the zoning board, no one was available to answer questions from the commissioners.
The proposed resolution would add consistency to wording and a table in the CUP regulations.
Current wording says livestock operations of 1,000 animal units or less do not need a CUP and includes a table that shows setbacks for 300 animal unit operations.
The commissioners debated changing the wording, the table or both to a different number.
The resolution would also change setback wording from homestead to home site.
Any current livestock operation would be grandfathered in.
Kunnemann said he didn’t want to see conditional use permits become more restrictive. Brown and Dinnel agreed, saying they’d rather see a CUP be less restrictive rather than more.
In the end, the commissioners sent the resolution back to the county’s zoning committee and suggested changing the setback table to 1,000 animal units while leaving the wording alone.
Other business
The board spent 30 minutes in a teleconference with Adrian Smith’s representative Eric Kamler.
Norman Fanning stopped by to discuss vacating 343 Avenue between 736 and 738 Road. The road passes through Fanning’s pasture.
Deputy County Attorney Rory Roundtree listed the steps in the process of vacating a road and suggested this section be vacated except for ag purposes.
The next meeting of the commissioners will be May 11 at 8 a.m. in the Chase County Courthouse.
