Cornhole tournament at Smokin’ draws 12 teams

One of the new events added to this year’s Smokin’ on Broadway lineup was a cornhole tournament.
Cornhole tourneys have become a popular sport throughout the country, and it’s alive and well in Chase County.
Saturday’s competition drew 12 two-person teams. They competed in the air-conditioned city gym on the city square grounds where Smokin’ activities were headquartered.
Randy Roesener, a member of the local C2 Baggers, coordinated the tourney, which was set up in a double-elimination bracketed format. Those advancing in the winners’ bracket played best two out of three, while the losers’ bracket teams faced a one-and-done matchup.
Roesener said 100% of the $40 team entry fees were used in cash payouts to the first, second and third place teams.
The North Platte team of Randy Orvin and Zack Gartrell took first and won $240. Another North Platte team, George Tomek and Tyler Waltemath, placed second, winning $150, while the Imperial team of Roesener and Kerry Shinn was third and won $100.
The team eliminated first, Paul Thomas and Keith Phelps of North Platte, received a set of Smokin’ on Broadway cornhole boards.
Here are the placings of all 12 teams in the tournament:
    1st Randy Orvin/Zack Bartrell, North Platte, $240.
    2nd George Tomak/Tyler Waltemath, North Platte, $150.
