Area emergency services respond to head-on injury accident on Hwy 6

On Nov. 6 at 8:56 a.m., the Chase County Sheriff’s Office, Imperial Fire Department and Chase County EMS responded to an injury accident at mile marker 33 on Hwy. 6.
The sheriff’s office received multiple 911 calls of an accident involving a semi truck. Once on scene emergency responders determined a 2011 Freightliner had been traveling northbound when it crossed the center line and was traveling in the southbound lane. A 2017 Hyundai SUV was traveling south and swerved left in an attempt to avoid a head-on collision, the sheriff’s report said.
The semi struck the SUV on the passenger side, causing the vehicle to spin and eventually come to rest in the northbound lane. The semi continued north and traveled into the east ditch, striking a row of trees, the report said.
Both vehicles were determined to be a total loss. Both drivers were transported to the hospital by ambulance for minor injuries. The semi had been driven by Beau Burkhalter, 34, from McDonald, Kansas, and the SUV had been driven by Mitzi Stroyek, 69, from Hastings, Nebraska. Burkhalter was issued a citation for driving left of center, the sheriff’s report said.
