WP wrestlers heading to Sutherland for districts

    A season’s worth of work came to a head Friday and Saturday for the Wauneta-Palisade wrestling team.
    Districts will be Friday and Saturday at Sutherland. Teams there will be Banner County, Bayard, Bridgeport, Crawford, Dundy County Stratton, Garden County, Hay Springs, Hemingford, Hitchcock County, Hyannis, Kimball, Leyton, Maxwell, Medicine Valley, Minatare, Mullen, North Platte St. Patricks, Paxton, Perkins County, Sioux County, South Platte and Sutherland.
    Mullen is the third ranked team in Class D, Hitchcock County is ninth and Sutherland 11th. Sutherland placed third at Saturday’s Class D State Duals Championships.
    RPAC opponent Cambridge finished fifth, going 2-1 at Kearney.
    At 220 lbs., Draven Miner is listed as a contender to make the bracket’s top four.
    Coach Danny Schluckebier said it’ll be an important two days for the Broncos.
    “We will plan to all show up ready to wrestle and come together as a team to do what’s necessary,” he said.
    Konner McCrumb, Trey McCrumb and Blake Nickerson could have a shot to sneak in a trip to state, he added.
    “We have kids with a shot at making it to state but we will still have to step up and work hard,” Schluckebier said, “adding anything is possible.”
    The Broncos got their final regular season competition in Friday at the Southwest Invite.
    After losing his first round match, Miner won back-to-back matches to advance to the third place match and finished in fourth place.
    K. McCrumb, 106 lbs., T. McCrumb, 170 lbs, and B. Nickerson, 182 lbs., each went 1-2.
    Bob Chism, 106 lbs., Coleman Chism, 113 lbs., Justin Warembourg, 152 lbs., Sean Manley, 195 lbs., all went 0-2.
    B. Chism fell to Class D No. 8 Gavin Patterson of Wilcox-Hildreth. Warembourg was pinned by Class D No. 6 Rafe Hill of Arapahoe. C. Chism lost to Kansas 321A No. 3 Josh Juenemann of Oberlin-Decatur Community.
