Three take home medals from SPVA cross country meet

Runners head to Ogallala Thursday for district meet

Chase County closed out the regular cross country season with good performances at the SPVA Conference meet.
Hosted by Perkins County in Grant last Thursday, the Longhorns garnered three medals individually, while the boys were second in team standings and the girls, third.
Ten individual medals in both 5K races were awarded in the 7-team meet.
Trevin Moreno, in 5th, and Haven Hauxwell, 8th, on the CCS boys’ side along with 7th place finisher McKenzie Vogt for the girls all earned medals.
Coach Carl Zuege said the boys’ team came in strong and fresh for the race.
Moreno stayed up front all of the race, running against some of the state’s best Class D runners, Zuege said, and believes Hauxwell had his strongest race of the season.
Andrew Wiest in 12th and Brayan Reyes, 13th, rounded out the scoring for the boys.
In team points, the boys were second behind likely Class D state champion North Platte St. Pat’s.
On the girls’ side, Vogt, a senior, ran her final season at the SPVA meet and brought home a medal, running a good race, Zuege said.
“She was in 10th or 11th most of the race and the last mile moved up,” he said.
Tessa Smith in 14th, Faith Hauxwell 17th and Maddie Hanes 24th rounded out the girls’ scoring for third place in the team standings.
Zuege said if he had it to do over again, he’d likely not have run the girls so hard at practice leading up to the SPVA meet. He said their legs may have been a little tired.
“They may not have had as fresh of legs but we feel we’ll have that adjusted in practice for this week ahead of districts,” he said.
Districts Thursday
Chase County will be one of 12 teams at the C5 District Meet Thursday in Ogallala at Crandell Creek Golf Course.
The boys run first at 3:30 p.m. followed by the girls at 4:15 p.m.
The past couple of years, Ogallala has hosted both a Class C and B district meet on the same date, but only the C5 boys’ and girls’ races will be held this year, Zuege said.
The top three teams and 15 individuals Thursday will punch their ticket for the state meet in Kearney Oct. 21.
Zuege said his boys’ team has a legitimate shot for the third place team placing on Thursday.
“We’ll just need four guys to put together a good race,” he said.
Focus for the girls Thursday, he said, will be to improve their times recorded at the Ogallala Invitational three weeks ago.
