Something for everyone; 36 Longhorns compete

It was tough to get a good grasp of what to expect at last week’s Don Stine Invite in Cambridge.
As weather forced cancellations and postponements across the region, teams went looking for a meet to add. Several of them, like Wallace and Paxton, ended up in Cambridge. Larger schools also brought more than just their JV athletes.
In the end, it was still the Chase County girls track team on top. CCS more than doubled second place Ogallala’s score, 174-68.
CCS took advantage of the JV/varsity meet to get as many athletes into events as possible. The Longhorns had six athletes in each sprint race, the throws and jumps, and ran two relay teams in the 400 and 1,600-meter relays.
Bryn McNair placed first in the high jump, 200 and 400-meter dashes, and teamed up with Peyton Owens, Olivia Spady and Riley Rusher to win the 1,600-meter relay.
The Longhorns swept the three relays.
Finishing second behind McNair were Riley Rusher in the 400 and Miranda Spady in the 800. Rusher was also second in the 200.
Kaylie Lotspeich was second in the shot put and discus.
Owens was second in the 300-meter hurdles.
Chase County had eight events with three athletes in the top eight.
Up next
The Longhorns will be at the Sutherland Invite Friday.  The meet should be a good one with Arthur County, Dundy County Stratton, Garden County, Hershey, Hyannis, Maxwell, Paxton, Perkins County, Sandhills Valley, North Platte St. Pat’s, Sutherland and Wallace attending.
Hometown fans can get a look at CCS Tuesday when Chase County hosts its invite.  Events will begin at 9 a.m. DCS, Garden County, Ogallala and Perkins County are scheduled to attend.
