A bloody nose didn’t stop Jaret Peterson from earning a pin over Southwest’s Clayton Hardy in the semifinals of the Medicine Valley Invite.

Longhorns second at MV

    Behind first place finishes from Thomas Reeves and Jaret Peterson and a string of third place wins, the Chase County wrestling squad placed second at Friday’s Medicine Valley Invite.
    Reeves improved to 25-13 on the season with his performance at 182 lbs. After a quarterfinal win, Reeves won by major decision in the semifinals. Reeves took first place with a second period pin of Sutherland’s Cole Kerner (22-19) in the championship match.
    Peterson (36-3) picked up two pins, including one against Southwest’s Clayton Hardy (32-9) to advance to the first place match. There, he faced Sutherland’s Gavin White (36-3). The two battled to a 2-2 tie that Peterson broke with a last second take down for the win.
    After a first round loss, Trevin Moreno pinned his next two opponents and was third at 113 lbs.
    Westyn Mendenhall won his first two matches at 132 lbs. by fall before losing in the semifinals to Matt Bruns (40-1) of Sutherland. Mendenhall bounced back to win his final two matches and take third place.
    At 138 lbs., Luis Co also won his first two matches before a semifinal loss to Southern Valley’s Cole Broeker (29-8). Co pinned his next two opponents to claim third place.
    Zach Tarin won his first match at 195 lbs. by pin, but in his second match was pinned late in the second period by Hitchcock County’s Keegan Shuler (33-2). Tarin won his third match by pin and took a 3-2 decision over Eric Halsted of Sutherland in the consolation match.
    Malachi Christensen placed fourth with a 2-2 day at 126 lbs., Zach Herbert went 2-2 and placed fourth at 152 lbs.,
    Brice Vitosh won three matches and lost two at 160 lbs.
    Cayden White went 1-2 at 120 lbs., George Colton was 1-2 at 132 lbs. and Cody Duffy was 1-2 at 152 lbs.
    Cooper Dillan split his first matches at 170 then forfeited his third match.
Up next
    CCS will be in Bridgeport Thursday for the SPVA Conference meet. Sutherland, which won the team title at MV and is the Class D second seed in this weekend’s NSAA Dual State Championships, continues to bulldoze its way through the season and boasts the most complete team in the conference.
    The state championship meet will begin Feb. 17. Class C will be in the morning sessions the first two days. All classes of semifinals and third round consolation matches will be the evening of Feb. 18. All classes and girls will wrestle throughout the day on Feb. 19 with championship matches to begin at 2 p.m. Medicine Valley Invite, Jan. 28, 2022
