Longhorns get first district win over Gordon/Rushville

The Chase County Longhorn football team had a huge night on defense when Gordon/Rushville rolled into town Friday evening.
Despite the Mustangs getting 133 yards on 2 plays, the defense held them to just 105 total yards on the night. On the third possession for G/R they where backed up at the 15 yard line when the senior quarterback Caleb Heck found Kyler Vincent on a crossing pattern over the middle who took it 80 yards to Chase Counties five yard line. He was run down by Malachi Christensen with a shoe string tackle to keep him from scoring.
The only other big play from the Mustangs came in the second quarter when Heck dropped back to pass and scrambled his way for 53 yards before Tristan Jablonski brought him down at the seven yard line.
Other than those two plays the swarming Longhorn defense overpowered the Mustangs at every turn.
G’/R got the ball to start the game and went three and out. After a short punt the Longhorns took over at the Mustangs 41. A mishandled snap by Malachi Christensen lost four yards when he fell on top of it.
On second and 14 a toss back to Thomas Reeves got 10 yards bringing up third and four. Reeves went up the middle but the defensive line held their ground for a three yard gain.
Kind of stuck in no mans land coach Gaswick went for it on fourth and one with the option to the right. Christensen pitched to Reeves and he went untouched 31 yards for the first touchdown of the night. The kick by McArthur gave Chase County a 7-0 lead.
After stopping Gordon/Rushville on three straight downs Jesus Medina busted through the defensive line and got the first of his two punt blocks and recoveries.
The Longhorns took over on the 14 yard line of Gordon/Rushville but turned it over on downs when a pass from Christensen to Cooper Dillan fell just short at the two yard line.
This gave life to the Mustangs as they launched their only successful drive of the night. On third down Heck hit Vincent for the 80 yard reception over the middle.
Three plays later Heck found a seam to his left and dove in for Gordon/Rushville’s only score. On the extra point attempt the snap went off the hands of the holder Kyler Vincent and he picked it up to try and run it in. Zach Herbert denied him of getting in the end zone, throwing him out of bounds at the two.
It was all Chase County after that scoring two more times in the second Quarter.
The mustangs stopped a drive of the Longhorns but got pinned deep with a good punt. After the Longhorns held G/R on three straight downs Medina got his second blocked punt and jumped on the ball at the 18.
On third down Luis Co ran it in from 11 yards out and McArthur added the kick to make it 14-7. After stopping the Mustangs again the Longhorns added another score when Dillan took the ball on a misdirection play and slipped in for the touchdown. McArthur had his kick tipped at the line and it fell just short of the goal post leaving the Longhorns up 20-6 at halftime.
The starters got one more possession to start the second half and made it a short one when Reeves took the handoff through a huge hole the line had opened up and went 68 yards to pay dirt. McArthur added the extra point for the final score of the night giving the Longhorns the 27-6 win and bringing their record to 3-2.
The Longhorns had 227 yards rushing and 45 passing compared to 9 rushing and 96 passing for the Mustangs. Cooper Dillan went 1/1 for 41 yards while Christensen was 2/3 for four yards.
Thomas Reeves led the rushing attack with 147 yards and 2 touchdowns on 12 carries. Tucker Hubbard had 36 on 10 carries, Dillan had 22 and 1 TD on 5 carries, Co had 20 and 1 TD on 3 carries, Mollendor 5 on 2, Christensen 4 on 2, McArthur 1 on 1 Krayton Paisley Minus 1 on 1.
Tristan Jablonski made all 3 catches for a total of 45 yards.
Dillan had 2 interceptions and Medina had two blocked punts with the recoveries.
On defense Tucker Hubbard was in on 15 tackles with 2 for a loss, Reeves had 9 with 3 for a loss, Jaret Peterson had 9 with 1 for loss, Sean Heerman had 8, Dillan 6, Tyler O’Neil 5 with 1 for loss, T. Mollendor 4, T. Jablonski 3, Co 2, Christensen 2, Carson Terryberry 2, Z. Tarrin 2, J McArthur 1, Destry Russell 1.
Next action:
On Friday Sept. 28 the Longhorns will travel to Hershey to take on the 1-4 Panthers. Hershey is coming off a 42-7 pounding by Mitchell last week. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. MT. The following week will be homecoming against Mitchell which will also probably determine the district champion.
