Longhorns fourth at loaded Southern Valley Invite

The Chase County wrestling team moved a week closer to settling into lineup with a strong showing at the Southern Valley Invite Friday.
The Longhorns finished fourth as a team despite having several wrestlers continue to compete up a weight bracket.
CCS Head Coach Matt Vlasin said that may hold true for one more tournament, Saturday at the Sidney/Bridgeport Invite, but he expects everyone to be at the goal weight by the first of the year.
Vlasin was pleased his team wrestled better than it did at last week’s Broken Bow Invite.
Luis Co had one of the longer days for CCS, but came out of it with a first place medal. Co advanced to the championship match with three decisions before winning first with a pin.
Jaret Peterson claimed first place at 220 lbs. After two quick wins, Peterson went the distance in his final two matches to win by decision.
Zach Tarin wrestled up and filled an opening at 285 lbs. Tarin opened the day with a pin, then had to go to extra time to beat Class D 2022 state qualifier Taylor Hubl of Hitchcock County. Tarin won his semifinal with a pin before losing to another state qualifier, Perkins County’s Juan Perez, in the finals.
Thomas Reeves overcame a second round loss to Class C #8 Jake Hodson to finish third. Reeves third place match was a 4-0 win over Class D #8 Caden Zutavern of Sandhills/Thedford.
Westyn Mendenall went 2-2 at 152 lbs and Dawson Mollendor was 2-2 at 182 lbs,
Vlasin said it will be interesting to see what type of competition shows up to Saturday’s invite, but he’s sure CCS will have some good matches.
