Longhorns dominate Mitchell
The Chase County boys’ basketball team came out with a skip in their step Friday at Sidney.
After being forced to forfeit their first round game of the Sidney Holiday Tournament to Gordon-Rushville due to poor travel conditions in southwest Nebraska, the Longhorns made up for lost time in their 69-33 romp over Mitchell.
CCS jumped out to a 12-0 lead and didn’t allow a point by the Tigers for over four minutes in the first quarter. The lead ballooned to 20-1 with 1:30 before the Longhorns allowed a field goal.
Chase County kept the hammer down in the second quarter. Helped along with 6-8 free throw shooting, CCS increased its lead to 36-9 before heading into halftime leading 43-17.
The Longhorns’ defense continued to keep Mitchell under their thumbs in the second half. Chase County held the Tigers to 16 points over the game’s final 16 minutes. CCS emptied its bench in the fourth quarter to wrap up the 69-33 win.
Kade Anderson totaled 19 points and Jensen Olsen scored 16 points in three quarters. Nine Longhorns scored in the game.
Guard Camron Lempke led the Longhorns with six rebounds.
CCS outscored Mitchell 20-2 in transition points and had 34 points off turnovers.
Up next
The Longhorns took on Dundy County Stratton (6-2) Tuesday. The Tigers entered Christmas break ranked sixth in Class D1.
A trip to Kimball (1-4) is on the CCS schedule for Saturday.
Next week Chase County will have a Tuesday contest with Southern Valley (3-4) and a Jan. 12 game with game with Perkins County (3-4).
CCS also has a game with Gothenburg (4-4) Jan. 13 before the SPVA tournament begins Jan. 17.
